Project Title: The process of urbanization on the Mediterranean coast. Towards an unsustainable model of land occupation? A retrospective (1956-2006) and prospective (2006-2026) analysis.
Funding body: The Spanish Ministry of Education and Science (MEC)
Project description: The project was directed towards analyzing the urbanization processes experienced along Mediterranean coastline, from Girona to Cadiz, over the period starting from 1956, the year in which the first Planning Act came into force, including 1980-81, the moment in which the first democratic councils were formed, up until 2006, as well as establishing the perspectives of urbanization over the next 20 years (2006-2026). The main project objectives:
- Delimitation and quantification of urban expansion (1956-2006) along different sections of the Spanish Mediterranean coastline, in and around Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia, Malaga and Cadiz and part of Mallorca.
- Development of a methodology for prospective analysis and the generation of software for forecasting demographic dynamics.
- The application of cellular automata techniques in the analysis of prospective spatial planning models.
The project is submitted jointly by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) through its Centre de Política de Sòl I Valoracions (CPSV) – Spain.
